Time to make your first block of the new NES Sampler Quilt a Long, Kirby. To remind you, this is what the entire NES Sampler Quilt will look like. The NES Sampler quilt will have a finished size of 51" by 67". For those not familiar with a Quilt a Long we will be releasing the pattern for one block each month on the 1st. You then have the entire month to make the block. Don't feel rushed though. The patterns will always be free and available in the forums so you can join and catch up at any time. You can pick and choose which blocks to make and in what order you would like to arrange them on the quilt. You just don't get the instructions for the next block in the series until the following month. This quilt can be made by experienced quilters, or those new to quilting. You only need to know how to use a sewing machine and a rotary cutter. New quilting tips will be highlighted so experienced quilters can skip over them. You can find the instructions on how to make Kirby here! Please let us know if there is anything in the patterns that are confusing or need to be explained further. If the the NES quilt is successful then we plan on releasing our own line of patterns for you! Happy Quilting!

For Step 3, after you nest them on top of each other... you cut them? Just laying on top of each other? Does that work without them shifting? Can you do that?? I've been so excited for these instructions to learn some of your tricks. I can't wait to try this one, though it seems a little like witchcraft to me

Also, since we're helping your proofread (correct?) in step 1, right after the table, there's an " that is the wrong way. Super critical, changes everything, I know

No, I would like these fixes! Thanks!!
As for the nesting, yes, it is withcraft. When you lay them on top of each other one seam should but into the other and they won't move when you cut it (just make sure you press down hard on your ruler you are using for cutting).

I just found another typo, when combining strips you combine the pink/lt pink strips, not pink/pink

Interesting. I'm working on something different today with nested seams, so I'll give that a try.

Nested Seams are an amazing trick to quick and easy quilting.

Update: I wasn't able to test them yesterday. I bought extra wide fabric for a quilt top and it is such a pain to work with. And all of my strips are slightly dog-legged, so everything had to be cut individually. BUT, first chance I get, I will test this out

Hi Toni! It looks great. No progress on my end. I'm going to make him next month. I'm trying to finish (start) Christmas gifts. I'm also launching a BOM through my site starting January 2. I just found out yesterday that American Made Brand will sponsor it (yay! They're my favorite fabric manufacturer) which is awesome, though it meant I spent yesterday redoing the quilt with their fabrics and will be frantically making block 1 when the fabric arrives. So... January... I will be starting on this in January. But I am going to do this BOM, dang it!

Hi Toni (and everyone). Happy new year! For the finished block in the final quilt, what should it measure? I know you say 13.5 x 13.5 - that's still with the outside seam allowance, right? Or should my block be 14 x 14 now and it ultimately will be 13.5 x 13.5?

LOL! Trim it to 13 1/2 by 13 1/2. That includes all seam allowances. You never need to make allowances for any of my instructions and I will always say if you do.

I guess I'm confused then... For how my brain works, I start with completely finished all-seam-allowance-is-gone size and work backwards. For the square guy (circled in blue), he's 2" to start, therefore 1.5" finished. For the red circled guy, he's 2 x 3.5, which becomes 1.5" x 3" finished. Each row is 9 (individual) squares across, so that would be 1.5" x 9 squares FINISHED = 13.5". So then with a fully finished row, but before it's attached to the quilt, wouldn't it be 13.5" + .5" seam allowance = 14"? So then the block should be 14 x 14 and ultimately finish at 13.5 x 13.5 when it's in the final quilt...? Right?
