Or working the other way, if you lay all 6 pieces next to each other, before sewing, they'd measure 16.5". You sew 5 seams to attach them = 5 * .5" = 2.5" lost in seam allowance. If you subtract the lost seam allowance from the starting length = 16.5 - 2.5 = 14" for the row, with a remaining 1/4" in each end. Attachments:

That is why there is a "border" around each one. Yes, ideally your square should be 14 inches finished, but we all know sometimes seams and ironing cause your square to be a little smaller or a little larger. It is set up that if this is your first quilt you do not have to be perfect and can square it to the 13.5 inches.

Just finished my block! Haven't trimmed it yet because I also had the 13.5 vs. 14" question. Mine is slightly under 14 though, so maybe I'll compromise and go 13.75? One other nit-picky thing to fix on the pattern; on page 2, row 4 of the diagram, there are two pieces touching where they should have a gap. Figured it out easily enough, but my first thought was that it should have been another pair joined ahead of time. Thanks for the great pattern! This is my first quilt with this many pieces, so I've appreciated all of your extra notes. Attachments:

I don't usually make blocks where you make them and then trim then down to a certain size, so I was reading this as an error, rather than a technique to give people more slack for things coming out oddly sized. Which now makes sense but I missed it Thanks for explaining

Your block looks amazing FunkyMonkey!!
Oh, I didn't even catch that on the 4th row thanks!! I will get it updated.
That's strange Lexxi, because every time I have done a BOM or bought patterns with separate blocks it always has me trim it to size. You guys can leave it like it is, or trim it to 13 3/4 if you like. You have 12 blocks, so they need to be the same size when adding the sashing.

Yeah, I think I'll wait until the end and trim all the blocks to match at the same time. That way I can see if they're trending small or if this was an exception.

I've always seen BOMs and whatnot where the 13.5" x 13.5" is what the pieces will work out to if you do everything "right" with the correct seams/cuts/etc. But I can only think of one pattern I've done where you make oversized blocks (even just slightly) and then trim them to size.

It is probably just the different types of patterns we are used to. It is a good point to say somewhere that you are making them a little oversized in order to trim.

Hi Toni. I finally had a project where I was cutting strip sets, and I nested them like you suggested and, wow, it worked perfectly. I was using my Shape Cut Ruler too, so I had all those suckers subcut in 30 seconds. It was amazing. Thank you!

Yay! I am so happy my witchcraft worked! Perfectly lines squares isn't that hard when you figure out the tricks.

I'm rather late to this party, but I wanted to show off my Kirby and thank you for such a fun pattern! This is my first attempt at anything resembling quilting (I've actually only been sewing for a few weeks). There's no way I'm going to manage all 12 blocks so I opted to finish Kirby into a pillow. He's not perfect, but I love him anyway. Thanks again!
