Ok so here goes...
As I mentioned in my intro post, I would like to do pixel art. Always thinking on the nerdy side of things, I was thinking of creating heraldry in 8bit. I still need to practice my pixel art for the moment, but before I get too excited I wanted to know if it would be infringing on copyright if I did this using aspects of video game characters to start?
Like if I wanted to do Mega Man, I would have a light and dark blue theme with the major weapons from Mega Man 1 working into the shield design with some sort of saying across the front (not in Latin cause no) but all in pixel art. It would be my interpretation of the sprites and not me ripping the sprites from a sprite page.

Will you be selling them or just doing it for yourself and gifts?

Selling hopefully. I'd like to do limited runs of stuff and see how they go.

If you use exact representations from published works (including video games) then yes, you would be infringing on the copyright. If you change and adapt it to your own interpretation of that work then it is considered parody and that is 100% legal.
That being said, there are some companies that will come after you for anything you make even if it is legal (/cough bethesda /cough). There are also some companies that welcome all fan art and embrace it. It is best to research and find out which would be more embracing before you do any paintings.
